“In June, 2010, I was lucky enough to stumble across a Volunteer Livingston ad by Cromaine District Library. Wow!! There began my association with a service-oriented, forward-thinking library. My first project involved working with the Youth Librarian to create links for the library’s webpage featuring homework help sites. This came at a time when I was really seeking an intellectually meaningful pursuit and boy did this fit the bill!

In chatting with the folks at the library, I inquired whether they were doing any outreach to the senior populations (a particular interest of mine), including those in assisted living facilities. To their credit, they leapt at a suggestion to conduct monthly book talks at a community senior center. These sessions have proven to be more than just a win-win. They are a triple win. Cromaine District Library is bringing books and the love of reading to seniors who otherwise may not have physical access to the library. The seniors have the opportunity to hear about new, engaging books they may not have discovered on their own. Many of the books have drawn on historical events, local history and inspiring, interesting events and people. The talks generally stimulate some kind of discussion revolving around the seniors’ experience or viewpoints and also provide for nostalgic reminiscence. I especially remember that after a discussion of a light-hearted book populated by some colorful Catholic nuns, one of the seniors called me over to show me a time-worn photo of his sister in her Nun habit, which he lovingly kept in his wallet.

Although the Volunteer Coordinator and the librarians at Cromaine District Library have repeatedly expressed their sincere thanks to me for leading these booktalks, I don’t think they’ll ever realize how indebted I am to them for offering me this opportunity to connect with a terrific, special group of seniors. Spending time with the seniors is like being enveloped in a room full of wisdom. Every month, I look forward to engaging with folks who have a love of reading and are who are willing to listen to me chat about it.”

What better way to spend a snowy Saturday morning in February than getting together with friends and neighbors and walking for a great cause? In its 22nd year, OLHSA, A Community Action Agency is ramping up the Walk for Warmth fun at the Hartland Educational Support Service Center on February 25, a tried and true location for our friends and supporters to warm up their sneakers and warm homes across the county. Family friendly entertainment will include Buzz Elliott from WHMI-FM as emcee, a foot-tapping soundtrack provided by local DJ Kurt Lewis, and much more.

As always 100 percent of the proceeds from Walk for Warmth will go towards keeping the heat on in the homes of Livingston County residents throughout our harsh Michigan winters. In the face of a persistent economic downturn, hundreds of local families will benefit from Walk for Warmth. By donating or raising just $300, you will keep the heat on in a home for an entire month, helping children stay healthy, learn better in school, and helping the whole family stay safe and warm.

Walkers (teams and individuals), sponsors, and volunteers are needed. Sponsorship levels have been adjusted this year to be even more attractive to local businesses, and can be viewed online at www.olhsa.org/walk4warmth.

The Livingston County Homeless Continuum of Care’s (HCCC) Fifth Annual Community Connect is coming soon! The event will be held January 28, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a NEW LOCATION: Parker Middle School in Howell, 400 Wright Road, 48843.

The Community Connect Planning Committee is also seeking volunteers to assist with the Community Connect event. If you are interested in participating please contact Donna at dgehringer or 810-494-3000 for more information or to sign up! Volunteers will be invited to participate for AM or PM shifts (or all day) and will be asked to attend a short orientation on Sunday, January 22, 2012 from 12:30-1:30PM or Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from 7-8PM at Parker Middle School to prepare for the big day!

The Livingston County Homeless Continuum of Care’s (HCCC) Fifth Annual Community Connect is coming soon! The event will be held January 28, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a NEW LOCATION: Parker Middle School in Howell, 400 Wright Road, 48843.

Community Connect is a one-day event to help Livingston County residents that are having trouble meeting their needs connect with the services in a friendly, easy to access location. Individuals can connect to over 40 organizations that can offer information and services such as housing assistance, health screenings, legal consultation, food services, haircuts, massages, clothing and other personal need items. Lunch and on-site professional childcare is also provided at no cost to participants. No registration is required for guests to attend Community Connect. For more information you can contact 211.

Last year’s event helped over 900 guests get connected to needed information and services. Event planners expect even larger crowds this year, due to continuing pressures on the local economy and growing numbers of people struggling to make ends meet. Thank you so much for getting the word out to the community!

At this time the Community Connect Planning Committee is requesting that any community agencies or non-profit agencies that would like to have an information booth about their services at Community Connect, as well as local service providers (such as hair stylists, masseuses, attorneys specializing in foreclosure or bankruptcy) that would like to donate their time and talents to contact the planning committee please contact Jodi at jbuchholz@rossprov.com for more information or to sign up!

The holidays are over, and the 5th Annual Livingston County Community Connect, on Saturday, January 28, 2012 , will be quickly upon us. We are expecting our biggest crowds ever in the new, larger, and more centrally-located venue – Parker Middle School, in Howell. You know what that means . . . even more volunteers will be needed. We are hoping that you will be a part of this exciting event again this year, and also that you will pass on the information to family, friends, and coworkers, and help us recruit even more caring volunteers for the day.

The volunteer registration forms are attached. We are still working out the details of the event in this new venue, so additional information will be provided through subsequent e-mails.

With your help, together with our wonderful event host – Howell Public Schools, especially the Parker Middle School staff – this is going to be the most exciting Community Connect yet!
